Our firm has a long history of providing legal services in the locality of Skye, Lochalsh and the Uists as well as throughout the whole of Scotland.
The firm originally began under the name of Messrs. Macdonald and Fraser which was set up by Alexander Macdonald and George Fraser who worked from the building in Bank Street, Portree, which now houses The Royal Bank of Scotland plc’s Portree branch. In the early 1970s, Donald Ferguson from North Uist and Ian Christie, changed the firm name to Christie and Ferguson. In fact, it was Donald Ferguson and Ian Christie that originally acquired the land where the firm’s current Portree office is now located whilst they operated the practice of Christie and Ferguson.
The firm of Christie and Ferguson continued into the 1990s when it briefly became Ferguson Miller & Stewart following the retirement of Ian Christie and then from 1993 Ferguson MacSween & Stewart, when Donald Ferguson, Murdo MacSween and Alpin Stewart started their then partnership. Donald retired in 2002 or thereabouts but continued as a consultant for a few years. Ian Christie sadly passed away in 1996 and is buried at Portree Cemetery. Donald Ferguson retired to his native North Uist and passed away in 2006. Sarah Farr actually worked with Donald Ferguson in her early days. In 2023, the current directors named the building “Ferguson House” which is when the firm changed entity and became a limited company known as FMS Law Limited.
The firm has gone from strength to strength over the years. The Kyle office was opened in the late 1990s after the Skye bridge opened and in 2016, the firm opened an office in Balivanich. In 2020, the firm were delighted to obtain brand new premises in Balivanich, centrally located on the way to the airport directly adjacent to the shores of the north Atlantic.
